One of main cause of non-dental head and neck pain is temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Its aetiology is complex, and its pathology is not fully known. As patient knowledge and interest in oral health have increased, orthodontists have been more interested in the connection between occlusal factors, orthodontic therapy, and TMD. The goal of this article is to provide a quick overview of the anatomy of the temporomandibular joint, TMD, and their complicated aetiology as well as their role in orthodontics.
