Abstract : Phytoplankton diversity indices reflects the health of the freshwater ecosystem; consequently these phytoplankton function as cost-effective bio indicators for determining the degree of pollution in our lifeline riverine ecosystem. In this study phytoplankton population density, their community composition and diversity indices were assessed as indicators of water quality along the Varanasi segment of the river Ganga in Uttar Pradesh. The SedgwickRafter counting chamber method was used to quantify phytoplankton density while the key physicochemical parameters were analysed using standard methods.
